【Market Commentary】Huawei’s flagship handsets, delayed for nearly 6 months, are now set to hit the market. They will feature the 5G Kirin 9000 chip, also found in Mate 40. With fewer than 5 million units stocked, these chips have been reserved for the P50 since 2020.

On the other hand, Huawei will also make use of a custom 4G version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, since Qualcomm is allowed to ship only 4G chips to Huawei. Releasing new 4G products, however, comes with major hurdles in China, where the 5G rollout is well underway.

Huawei’s new phones will sidestep GMS restrictions by featuring the latest HarmonyOS. Although this will somewhat help Huawei’s release overseas, going from release to widespread adoption takes time, so Huawei is not expected to seize much market share at the start.
